10 Ways AI Will Cause Unprecedented Damage this Year 

I received an alert from our partner Mitch Tanenbaum at Turnkey Cybersecurity & Privacy Solutions, regarding the ways AI will upend things this year. Citing a post byZDNet, he reminds us that artificial intelligence is inherently neither good nor evil, but cautions that it can be used for either. In 2026, artificial intelligence is poised to transform cyber risk from a tactical nuisance into a strategic threat, with experts warning that AI-driven attacks will be faster, more automated, and far harder to detect than previous threat waves. AI’s growing role in both offense and defense means the technology will amplify existing weaknesses and create wholly new vulnerabilities across the corporate landscape. 

Threat actors are rapidly incorporating AI into malware, phishing campaigns, and extortion tools, enabling automated scanning of networks for high-value data and dynamic adaptation to defensive controls. This shift makes traditional security postures built around pattern matching and static defenses less effective against self-adjusting malicious software that learns and evades controls

Phishing and social engineering are expected to become more convincing and scalable, as AI generates highly personalized lures and voice-synthesized social cues that are difficult for staff or automated filters to recognize. Ransomware, too, is likely to evolve, with attackers using AI to optimize timing, target selection, and encryption strategies that maximize financial and operational impact. 

Beyond technical exploitation, business leaders are cautioned that unauthorized or unmanaged use of AI tools internally, such as employees using consumer AI for sensitive workflows, could leak intellectual property or create compliance gaps. 

For crisis planners, the emerging theme is clear: AI doesn’t just change the speed of cyber threats. It changes their character, collapsing detection windows and forcing organizations to rethink monitoring, governance, and human-AI interaction protocols before the next major breach.
