Reported Data Breaches Hit an All-Time High at ITRC

In the recently released 2025 Data Breach Report from the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), they tallied an all-time high of 3,322 reported compromises, including 2,928 data breaches and nearly 280 million victim notices sent. Financial services were among the hardest hit, again, with 739 compromises. Professional services sector attacks increased by 162% over 5-year period.  Among the largest incidents by victim notice count: PowerSchool, 72 million notices; AT&T 2021 Data, 44 million notices; Aflac, 22 million notices. I received several such letters last year, and I’ll bet you did, too.  It is important to read these letters and heed the warnings. Keep in mind, too, that even if you have not been a victim, it is only a matter of time. Nearly nine in ten Americans have already been a victim of identity theft. It is important to educate yourself about data breach and take any and all measures to protect your private data.
