Late winter and spring have already delivered several deadly storms across the U.S. and around the world. Hurricane season looms. Colorado State University (CSU) released its 2025 hurricane season forecast, predicting an above-average hurricane season with seventeen named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes.
Weather disasters can happen anywhere, so take some time to prepare a “go-bag” with the essentials you will need in the event you must evacuate. Here are five tips:
- Pack the Essentials First
Include critical items such as water (at least one gallon per person per day for three days), non-perishable food, a flashlight with extra batteries, a multi-tool, and a first-aid kit. Don’t forget a whistle to signal for help. Include some cash in the event power is out and credit cards are unusable. - Important Documents
Secure copies of ID, insurance policies, medical records, and any essential financial documents in a waterproof pouch. Digital backups on a flash drive or secure cloud storage are also wise. - Health and Hygiene
Include personal hygiene items like toothbrush and toothpaste, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, feminine hygiene products, medications (at least a 3-day supply), and face masks. Don’t forget glasses or contact lens supplies if needed. - Communication and Power
Bring a fully charged power bank, cell phone charger, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio. These tools are vital for staying connected when cell towers are down or power is out. Pack extra batteries, too. - Don’t Forget Comfort and Clothing
Pack a change of clothes, sturdy shoes, rain gear, and blankets or an emergency thermal blanket. Small items like playing cards or a book can help ease stress during extended evacuations.
